I have to get to the top. I can't permit this less educated, no good person get there before me! Wait, I'll do what I have to. I don't care if I have to sleep with my boss, I'll get there. I sing better than her, why is she there? Can't they see my talent? I've been singing all my life! I know her past; I know what she's done. I'll just tell everybody, yup, that will definitely make everyone lose focus on her. Who do they think they are, they just got here and they took over? So what if they are successful in their business, I don't care! Look at them all high and mighty, I just want to.....
It's a do or die situation. Kill the competition. Why not? I'm I my brother's keeper (guardian, babysitter)? It is shocking to see how these statements are true to so many people and how it is happening everyday! It happens!
The eagerness of killing off their competition to make it to the top! Top of what? Insanity? It doesn't only happen in corporate America but it's also happening in the church. It happens everywhere. It's a mentality to get to the top at the cost of everything and everyone. Why him and not me? Why her and not me? These emotions didn't just appear in the 20th or 21st century, it’s been around for a very, very long time.
In the book of Genesis 4, we understand that this happened from the beginning. In eagerness to win, to be on top, the best I can be caused sin once more to surface and dominate. All positive statements can be a motivation if channeled correctly but the problem is that most people don’t have dominion to channel these emotions and they end up “killing” off their competition for a piece of the pie. I wish people would understand that in the kingdom of God there is enough to go around and have seconds. Our God owns everything, well, He doesn’t only own everything, He created everything. So therefore, everything is His. He has enough to give to everyone and if He runs out, I am sure He will create more!!
Let’s look at this story to understand Cain’s problem. Genesis 4:3-8 explains how Cain and Abel gave Jehovah God an offering. Abel’s offering pleased God, while Cain’s offering didn’t. Plain and simple. The problem was that Cain got highly upset with the fact that his offering didn’t make an impression on God. God wasn’t pleased with his abilities to farm. His anger turned to rage, then turned to hate. God even questioned him, what’s going on Cain? He warned him that sin was right in front of him and he needed to dominate it.
His hate was so much that he was in the field one day with his brother, Abel, and killed him. Killed him. Did I say, killed him? He had to kill off the competition. The one that God was pleased with, the one that offered God the correct offering. Just because his offering wasn’t pleasing, he killed him!! Have mercy!! Why?
Why do people think that by killing off the competition, they will get to the top? Whatever comes easy goes easy. The bible says that God is looking for a humble heart. Mathew 23:12 says that “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” All Cain had to do was humble himself. Say “Lord, I am sorry; I’ll fix it up and bring you what you asked for next time.” That’s it. Humbleness. God sees your work, God sees your efforts, He sees it all. The injustice, the prejudice, the hypocrisy, everything. He is a just God. All He asks of us is humbleness. Humbleness is not being proud and arrogant. Cain was proud. That was his problem. He thought that he deserved the applause. He thought that he was better than his brother. He thought that God was mistaken. So he killed his brother. Now God didn’t have anyone to be proud of. If it wasn’t him, then it’s not going to be anyone else. He was arrogant. I am the better person.
We can see his arrogant nature in Genesis 4:9 when God asks him where his brother was? Cain answers, “How should I know? Am I his babysitter? (The Message bible) Really Cain? Babysitter? Now you are being sarcastic with God. Oh my word… sarcastic with the creator. Arrogance will always lead to disrespect. Disrespect leads us to dishonor. Dishonor those around you and you will end up a very miserable human being.
If we only knew how priceless and special we are to our God. We wouldn’t have trouble looking at others and applauding them. All of us are part of the royal family. Special in His eyes. We don’t need to kill the competition to make it to the top. We are already on top. We are already sitting in high places. You can’t get higher than that. You don’t have to kill off your competition to get the things you want in life. What goes around comes back around. You work hard, it will pay off. God does honor those who honor Him. God does reward us. He loves us just the way we are. If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and will heal their land. (2 Chronicles 7:14)
